Levi Strauss, the inventor of the quintessential American garment, was born in Buttenheim, Bavaria on February 26, 1829 to Hirsch Strauss and his second wife, Rebecca Haas Strauss; Levi had three older brothers and three older sisters. Two years after his father succumbed to tuberculosis in 1846, Levi and his sisters emigrated to New York, where they were met by his two older brothers who owned a NYC-based wholesale dry goods business called “J. Strauss Brother & Co.” Levi soon began to learn the trade himself.

Lacoste is a lifestyle brand, born of the inventiveness of a tennis champion, René Lacoste, who created the first polo shirt ever, initially for himself and for his friends, to be both relaxed and elegant on and off the tennis courts.

Nicknamed the Crocodile by the press in the late 1920's when he was a multiple Grand Slam tennis champion, René Lacoste had the animal embroidered on the blazer he wore on court, before making it the logo of his famous polo shirt.

In my former role I headed up the department of Sports Marketing for PUMA Germany from 2009 until 2012. Before that I was Head of Advertising at PUMA Germany. Born in 1850, C. C. Filson inherited his father's pioneer spirit and love of the outdoors. After homesteading in Nebraska and roaming the country as a railroad conductor, he moved to the small city of Seattle, Washington in the 1890s.

 

Filson's timing couldn't have been better. By 1897, the Great Klondike Gold Rush was on, and thousands of fortune hunters were stampeding into Seattle, headed north. Armed with a strong work ethic, a reputation for honesty and several years' experience operating a small loggers' outfitting store, C. C. Filson was ready to stake his claim to fame.
